Reflexiones Semenales
Weekly Reflections

Each week, Juan Ramirez, the Coordinator of Hispanic Ministry, provides a reflection on this webpage and in some bulletins throughout the diocese.

Tercer semana de mayo 2017

CONOCIENDO A DIOS:

KNOWING GOD:
SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Jesus has been taken up into heaven as we begin today's first reading. His disciples, including the Apostles and Mary, return to the upper room where He celebrated the Last Supper (Luke 22:12). There, they devoted themselves with one accord to prayer, awaiting the Spirit that He promised would come upon them (Acts 1:8).

Second week of May 2017

ALIVE IN THE SPIRIT:
SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Jesus will not leave us alone. He won't make us children of God in Baptism only to leave us "orphans". He assures us in today's Gospel (see Romans 8:14-17).....

WHAT ARE WE TO DO?
FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Easter's empty tomb is a call to conversion.
By this tomb, we should know for certain that God has made Jesus both Lord and Messiah, as Peter preaches in today's first reading.

Fourth week of April 2017

EMMAUS AND US:
THIRD EASTER SUNDAY

We should put ourselves in the shoes of the disciples described by the Gospel of today. They go down the road sad and crestfallen, unable to comprehend everything that had happened....

Third week of April 2017

HIS MERCY ENDURES:
SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY

We are children of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. His Father, through this marvelous sign of his great mercy, has given us a new birth, as we hear in today's epistle....

Segunda semana de abril 2017

VIERON Y CREYERON:

THEY SAW AND BELIEVED:
EASTER SUNDAY

In today's Gospel, Jesus is not seen anywhere. However, it shows us that Peter and John "saw and believed."
What did you see? Funerary canvases that lay on the floor of an empty tomb.....

EVERYTHING HAS BEEN FULFILLED: PALM SUNDAY

"But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled,” says Jesus in today's Gospel (Matthew 26:56).
Moreover, we have reached the climax of the liturgical year; the highest summit in the history of salvation, when all that was predicted and promised is to be fulfilled....

Fourth week of March 2017

IN LAZARUS' TOMB

As we approach the end of Lent, today's gospel clearly has in view the future passion and death of Jesus.
That is why John gives us details about the sister of Lazarus, Mary, who anointed the Lord in preparation for his burial...

Third week of March 2017

SIGHT TO THE BLIND

God sees things differently from us, as we heard in today's first reading. Jesus illustrates this in the Gospel: the blind acquires sight and the Pharisees become blind. The blind man represents all mankind. He, who "is born whole in sin" (he is made a new creature through the saving power of Christ)...

IS MERCY OVER?

A few months ago we celebrated the closing of the Year of Mercy in the Church. Many may think that at the close of this extraordinary year of mercy, we can no longer have the grace to receive the mercy of God in our lives. That is why I want to reflect on the Apostolic Letter Misericordia et Miseria that our Holy Father wrote at the end of the year of mercy...

JESUS, THE SUN OF JUSTICE, WILL HEAL US WITH HIS LOVE!
Who has not gone for a walk at dawn, during the fall, without enjoying the weather, the colors of the trees, and the majesty of the sun rising from the east?

XXXII Sunday of Ordinary Time, 11/6/2016

JESUS AND THE SADDUCEES: DIVINE PROVIDENCE BEFORE ELECTION DAY

Jesus’ determined journey to Jerusalem has ended—He is already in Jerusalem in the Temple area. Jesus, the Prophet, is in Jerusalem to give up his life for the salvation of the world “for it is impossible that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem” (Lk 13:33b).

Picture

XXXI Sunday of Ordinary Time, 10/30/2016

WHAT DID YOU, JESUS, SAY AND DO?

Jesus, what did you say and do during your stay in Zacchaeus’s house so that Zacchaeus might have decided to turn to you and his neighbors in very selfless ways?

XXX Ordinary Time, 10/23/2016

WHAT ABOUT IF…?

What about if Jesus would have asked his disciples the following question at the end of the parable of today’s gospel, instead of giving a verdict?

JESUS ON THE CROSS

Recently, I have been reflecting on Jesus Christ on the Cross; even more than before. I don’t mean reflecting on the beautiful crucifixes we have in our churches and/or at home; but on Jesus Himself on the Cross dying for our salvation.

XXVIII Sunday of Ordinary Time: 10/09/2016

YOUR FAITH HAS SAVED YOU

I can’t imagine the happiness of the lepers healed by God in today’s first reading and in the gospel! As we heard in the first reading, God heals Naaman through the prophet Elisha; and, in the gospel, God Himself heals ten lepers in the Person of his Son Jesus Christ...

INCARNATING GOD'S SELF IN US TO BE MERCIFUL
“Jesus is expensive!” somebody said at a meeting I attended while discussing the cost of crucifixes. Certainly, Jesus is not expensive; some crucifixes are! God is generously merciful and his being merciful is the gift of his own Self for us. This might mean that...

EL SEGUIMIENTO DE JESÚS: UNA INVITACIÓN A LA PLENITUD; PERO COSTOSA

XXVII Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 2/10/2016

JESUS, AUMENTA NUESTRA FE

XXVII Sunday of Ordinary Time- 10/2/2016

JESUS, INCREASE OUR FAITH

Have we ever complained to God about the injustice around the world, in our society/city/town, in our families, and, even, in our hearts? The Prophet Habakkuk (626-587 BC), in the first part of today’s first reading (1:2-3), complains to God, I would say in a very desperate tone, about the injustices of his time...

XXV Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

TO WHOM DO WE SERVE?

To whom do we serve? This might be the question that the Prophet Amos and the author of the gospel of Luke are asking to their audiences and to us today. To whom do we serve? Do we serve mammon or do we serve God?
Picture

XXV Sunday of Ordinary Time

¿A QUIÉN SERVIMOS?

¿A quién servimos? ¿A quién servimos? ¿Servimos a Dios o al dinero?

XXIII Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

A KIND PERSON: A LIVING WITNESS OF TRUTH AND MERCY
Who has not enjoyed being with a kind person? A kind person conveys trust, peace, joy, and truth to a relationship. And truth is Jesus himself. Therefore, by bringing Jesus to our lives a kind person helps us to discover...

A WINTER STORY
That morning was cold, foggy and even dark. Steve got up early and walked to the closest parish before going back home.
